These last few weeks I read up on white privilege especially and will share as soon as I have a few books under my belt and a more extensive list to offer. Today I want to focus on black female authors and a few gems of books I came across lately and think you should read too (just click on the title to see more):
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi
A story told between two half-sisters and their paths within colonialism and slavery in Ghana and America over 250 years. Effia and Esi are the epitome of strength and make Homegoing an interesting read that taught me so much. I am only one-third in but had to include it in this post. I can’t wait to continue reading.
Such a fun age by Kiley Reid
A modern-day tale of white blogger Alix and her Black babysitter Emira and an incident that changes their lives forever. If you’re looking for a read that takes on white privilege bluntly and introduces characters that sound familiar from your very own life, this is it.
The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory
If you love romance novels but are sick of reading about the same kind of heroine over and over again, this will be right up your alley. Alexa and Drew meet while trapped in an elevator and agree to be each other’s wedding dates. If you want a good laugh, charming banter, and hot sex scenes with a strong, curvy, Black woman on the forefront, look no further.
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
This bestseller told from the perspective of a 16-year-old Black girl in current America is powerful and heartbreaking at the same time, but such an important read. It was recently filmed starring Amandla Stenberg. I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I can’t believe it took me so long to pick up the book, don’t make the same mistake!
What a time to be alone: The Slumflower’s Guide to why you are already enough by Chidera Eggerue
“What a time to be alone is a book by a recovering hypocrite. It’s here to remind you that no matter where you find yourself in life, you will ALWAYS have to face your truth. All of it. You’re not alone, you’re not crazy. Your feelings are valid and it’s time to make peace with them… all of them,” the introduction reads and I couldn’t agree more. Buy it, and read it, over and over again!
