Where To Eat in Malmö Sweden 2023 | The Ultimate Foodie Guide

Where to eat in Malmö wasn’t a subject on my radar until about a year ago. Malmö, Sweden is not a loud city like Rome or pricey like Copenhagen, and even though it is the third largest city in Sweden (after Stockholm and Gothenburg), it excels in its quiet charm and beauty. I have been smitten ever since my first visit which happens to be one of the perks of falling in love with a Swede who then relocated south to Malmö, so much so that I am splitting my time between Vienna and Malmö for now.

Where to eat in Malmö 2023

You wouldn’t think of a food haven when you think of Malmö, but you should. If anything, my various food posts are proof. So far, I let you live vicariously through me on my trips through social media but decided it is time to put all my tips together into one ultimate Malmö Food Guide from one semi-local foodie’s plate straight to yours.

The Best Coffee, Brunch and Fika in Malmö

LILLA KAFFEROSTERIET is my favorite place in the city for a nice coffee (I am addicted to yellow pea milk now!) and a kanelbullar (cinnamon bun) or other pastry for fika which, summed up, is the traditional Swedish afternoon break. They have a lovely outside area to just bask in the sun away from the hustle and bustle of the busy street. Their vintage chic interior is so wholesome and many vegans like to stop by to grab a breakfast sandwich here too. Go to: Baltzarsgatan 24

RUTH’S is a coffeehouse, deli, bakery and restaurant with the best cinnamon granola in town and their Turkish eggs are amazing as well which are only two reasons why it has to be mentioned in every Malmö Food Guide. I like the vibe and mixed clientele – from after-yoga-buddies to quick business lunch coworkers – perfect for people-watching and also getting some work done. Bring your laptop and stay for a coffee or two – oh, and don’t miss out on the pastries! Go to: Mäster Johansgatan 11

ATRIUM is a modern brunch place with a typical Scandinavian interior including a fireplace. It’s charming and cozy and the food really is superb. It was the only place we went to where I could find my beloved Eggs Benedict. If you are a plant lover, you will love the indoor jungle vibe. The indoor fire place adds to the cozy vibe. It can be quite a walk from the city center but worth it in my opinion (and you can always take the bus). Go to: Skvadronsgatan 13

The Best Quick Lunch in Malmö

JALLA JALLA is that typical hole-in-the-wall place that people usually pass by unless they are specifically looking for it. If you’re looking for the freshest falafel – which Malmö is known for – and chicken wrap, this is where you will find it at a decent price. Go to: Bergsgatan 16

MALMÖ SALUHALL is an indoor food hall with its own app that offers a variety of different dishes – think sandwiches, burgers, salad bowls and handmade pizza – and local foods to enjoy together at the communal tables upstairs or outside. It’s the perfect lunch spot for coworkers and if you’re wandering around in that area. I had the best Ruben sandwich there which was vegetarian (!) and rumor has it you will get the best ice cream in the city at Saluhall. Go to: Gibraltargatan 6

The Best Dinner in Malmö

BULLEN is a Malmö institution in its own right. Serving the famous köttbullar (meatballs) in Malmö since 1897. Traditional Swedish meals are served in the traditional Swedish way. Our dinner was absolutely delicious and filling and the memorabilia on the walls gives you lots to talk about! Go to: Storgatan 35

CASUAL STREET FOOD is the best place to go for burgers and fries. Their signature burgers change seasonally and are served in brioche buns in little baskets. As the name suggests it’s the perfect spot for casual dinners. Go to: Bergsgatan 8

LU Koket or Lu’s Kitchen is a tiny family-style Chinese restaurant known for its fresh and flavorful food. The vegetarian green bean dish, cucumber salad and dumplings were amongst the best I ever had and I usually don’t eat green beans! Go to: Davidshallstorg 3

NAMU is a Korean restaurant praised in the Michelin Guide for its inventiveness for one, and I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday there this year. It’s so nice to date a fellow foodie and my boyfriend hit it out of the park by choosing this gem of a place. Every dish was divine but their cocktail of the day might have been one of the best drinks I ever had (I maybe drink three times a year). It was a yuzu daiquiri with dill and just indescribably good! Name has a very simple, laid-back vibe that makes it easy to feel welcome and come again soon. Go to: Landbygatan 5

The Best Tasting Menus In Malmö

LYRAN was my first ever tasting menu dinner which we went to experience back in March. It’s a very small restaurant with a cabin feeling that only uses seasonal and regional produce and some magic to create the most incredible dishes in texture and flavor. They also offer full pescetarian and vegan options. Since the menu is always changing, we will definitely be back. Go to: Simrishamnsgatan 36A

VÄSTERGATAN was the fresh springy tasting menu dinner we enjoyed in May. Very different than Lyran, Västergatan focuses on fish and fresh light ingredients for an authentic Swedish food experience. Go to: Västergatan 6
